The Ventura College Athletics Department was named the 2018-2019 Western State Conference Supremacy Award winner on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates held off district and divisional rival Moorpark College for their second straight win. Ventura averaged 6.55 points, while Moorpark averaged 6.13 in its runner-up finish.

The Pirates ran off with its unprecedented 21st Supremacy title thanks to earning points in 17 of its 18 WSC sponsored sports (the WSC Supremacy Award doesn’t include performances in the sports of football or wrestling, since they are not sponsored by the WSC). Ventura won four divisional crowns in 2018-2019, taking home outright titles in Women’s Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, while also sharing titles in Men’s Basketball and Baseball. Aside from the four titles, the Pirates also racked up six runner-up finishes, meaning 10 of their 18 WSC teams finished in first or second place. Rounding out the accolades was a superlative 3.24 departmental GPA, which was also tops in the WSC.

For Moorpark, it was their best finish since 2003, when they finished just behind Ventura. The Raiders won a conference championship in Women’s Basketball this past year, stopping a 28-year run by the aforementioned Pirates. Moorpark also boasted runner-up finishes in Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Cross Country, and Men’s Track & Field.

Finishing in third place was Cuesta College who posted a strong 6.07 average. The Cougars shared a WSC title in Men’s Basketball this past year, and got steady production throughout its program with 10 of its 14 sports earning at least six points. It’s the best finish for Cuesta since they came in second place during the 2008-2009 academic year.

In fourth was perennial WSC Supremacy contender College of the Canyons. The Cougars finished just behind Cuesta with a 6.06 average per sport. Canyons was home to three conference titles in 2018-2019 (Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, and Men’s Soccer). Rounding out the top five was Bakersfield College. The Renegades averaged 5.53 points per sport and won titles in Women’s Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball. It’s the best finish for Bakersfield College since 2010 when they came in third place.

The Western State Conference Supremacy Award was established during the 1980-1981 academic year, and is now in its 41st year of existence. The Western State Conference was established in 1950, making it the oldest community college conference in California.

The Western State Conference is committed to academic excellence, along with community responsibility through athletic participation. It has been our intention to offer a variety of sports maintaining equitable competitive balance within a reasonable geographic area.
