Opening Day Win

Cypress, CA. -- The 2014 baseball season has started off with a bang for Cypress, the reigning State Champions. Coming off the title, the Chargers had many positions to fill as 13 players from last years squad went on to play at four-year schools. They didn't skip a beat as they easily took down Glendale, 11-1.

Stephen Kane, who's already signed to play at the University of Tennessee next year, got the start and the win. He threw seven strikeouts through the 6 1/3 innings before being relieved by Blake Mitchell. Mitchell got in one inning of work before before being replaced by Payton Lobdell. Lobdell was then relieved by Nathan Kuchta in the ninth who worked through the first two batters before ending the game on a swinging strike by Glendale's Lino Lares.

Three Chargers hit homeruns before the start of the sixth inning. The first was a two-run shot that came in the bottom of the third from Kramer Farrell which scored Tyler Gnesda from first to put the score at 4-1. Then with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Matt Tietz, who's already signed to play for Oklahoma State next year, put one over the fence to put the Chargers up 5-1. With one out in the fifth, Joe Van Marter drove in a two-run homerun that scored Kramer Farrel from first and increased the lead to 7-1.

The Chargers went on to add two runs in both the sixth and eigth innings to expand their lead to 11-1, which went on to became the final score.

The Chargers will remain at home this week when they face Ventura this Friday (1/31) at 2pm and then again Saturday (2/1) at noon.
