VENTURA - The Marauder women's basketball team had its first taste of the Western State Conference with a preseason victory over conference favorite LA Valley, 70-60, in the third place game of the Ventura Tournament, Saturday evening.
Fiona Ferry scored 19 points off the bench and netted four 3-pointers. Shantanel Bivens scored 15 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Marauders.
"It was a mental and emotional victory," AVC head coach Barry Green said. "I was very optimistic after losing a tough physical game against Ventura (on Friday). The girls bounced back and played like conference champions."
AVC's defense held the Monarchs to only 34 percent shooting, including 18 percent from 3-point range. The Marauders' Deja Smith had a team-high 21 points.
