Season Opening Win Streak Snapped in Loss to Ventura

Cypress, CA. -- The Chargers season opening win streak was snapped after two games as Ventura College beat the Chargers Saturday afternoon, 10-5. The Pirates win was spurred on during the top of the 3rd inning when they scored five runs.

Cypress scored first to open the game in the 2nd inning when Kramer Ferrell stole home. Grant Mayeaux then scored on RBI by Brandon Oliver, who was thrown out at first.

Dalton Douty had the starting nod for the Chargers. He was replaced by Matt Esparza in the third inning however, after allowing three runs and loading the bases. Two more runs scored for Ventura in the 3rd before the inning was over and the score stood at 5-2 Ventura.

Brandon Oliver drove Grant Mayeaux home again for another RBI in the fourth. Oliver was thrown on the play.

Kramer Ferrell pulled the Chargers withing a run of the Pirates, 5-4, in the 6th after he hit his third homerun of the season. Ferrell has hit a homerun in each of the Chargers first three games this season, the same amount the entire team hit all of last year.

Ventura then scored another run in the 7th off a wild throw to first base. Payton Lobdell came in to pitch for Esparza to start the eighth. Lobdell then gave up a homerun to Ventura's Scoot Morton. Lobdell walked a few more batters before being replaced by Ricky Schaffer. The Pirates then scored two more runs before Schaffer struck out the final batter to end the inning.

Mayeaux scored for the third time of the afternoon for the Chargers in the 8th to make the score 10-5. The Chargers were unable to score any more runs in the 8th or 9th and the game became final at 10-5 Ventura.

Shawn Domke got the win for the Pirates and Douty gets his first loss of the season for Cypress.

The Chargers remain at home for another game this Tuesday (2/4) against Long Beach at 2pm.
