Baseball: Roadrunners roll to 11-7 win over Oxnard

Marcos Rivas and Nick Ybarra both drove in two runs each to lead Rio Hondo College at the plate in its 11-7 win over visiting Oxnard College on Friday in Whittier. The victory improved Rio Hondo to 4-6 overall.

The Roadrunners trailed early in the contest after the Condors (3-7) posted a run in the top of the third and put together a three-run, fourth-inning rally. But Rio Hondo responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.

Marc Salcido and Aiden Gutierrez both hit RBI singles, Luis Aguilar forced in a run thanks to a bases-loaded walk, while an Oxnard error also led to a run.

From that point, the Rio Hondo offense took over. The Roadrunners scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings, and put up three runs in the seventh. Rivas' two-run single in the fifth broke a 4-4 tie and put Rio Hondo ahead for good.

Andres Hurtado earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners. He tossed two innings, allowing a run and two hits. Nicko Cottone closed out the victory with a pair of shutout innings in the eighth and ninth.

Rio Hondo will look to keep the momentum going on Thursday (Feb. 22) when the Roadrunners travel to San Diego Mesa College for a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
