BASEBALL: HORNETS WIN SEASON OPENER

Fullerton College hosted and beat West Los Angeles College 4-2 on Hornet Field as the CCCAA baseball season opened today.

The game began as a pitchers duel through the first three innings as neither team scored any runs. WLA had a no hitter going until the bottom of the fourth when the Hornet bats came to life.

Fullerton DH KC Huth got it started with a base hit to center field.  SS Jose Rojas then singled to short and catcher Oliver Jackson was hit by a pitch.  3B Oscar Heredia then grounded to short allowing Huth to score the first run.  LF James smith ripped a double to left field that scored Jackson and Rojas giving the Hornets a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the 5th WLA brought one across the plate on a ground-out by CF Eric Gronhagen which scored 1B Chris Gutierrez.

FC scored again in the bottom of the 5th when Heredia singled to shortstop scoring CF Dakota Wix.

West LA cut Hornet lead in half in the 6th on a throwing error by the Hornet's pitcher allowing SS Mateus Vakuda to score.  It would not be enough as the Fullerton College pitching staff held strong the rest of the way for the opening day win.

FC starting pitcher Kyle Lazcano threw a solid game going 4 innings with 5 strikeouts while allowing only 3 hits.  Josh Bornstein got the win going 2 innings with 2 strikeouts and 2 hits against.  Austin Sweet tossed an inning with 2 strikeouts with no runs against.  Christiannel Cosme and Dylan Prohoroff each threw an inning with 1 strikeout and no runs against.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-0) will take the field again this Saturday at El Camino-Compton Center.  The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 pm.
