LONG BEACH - The Marauder women's basketball team opened the state playoffs with a first-round victory against Long Beach City College, 65-59, Wednesday night.
With the victory AVC will face No. 1 seed, Mt. SAC on Saturday night, once again on the road.
The Marauders (15-13), which played from behind most of the game, were led by Makaela Manson, who finished with 19 points, including six 3-pointers.
"In order for us to move on, we have to hit shots," AVC head coach Barry Green said. "Tonight we were able to make shots."
In all, AVC knocked down 10 3-pointers, two other came from Brieanna Perkins, who finished with 10 points. Kaitilin Stephenson finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Deja Smith added nine points and eight rebounds and Ashley Shaw had eight points and nine rebounds for the Marauders.
AVC started slow and trailed 17-8 after the first quarter, but kept chipping away at the lead and outscored the Vikings 18-9 in the second quarter. The Marauders bench outscored Long Beach's 17-3.
