Tyler Bunderson and Lesly Zapata De Lira teamed up for the first time in the SBCC women's tennis' doubles lineup on Thursday and proved to be the difference in a 5-4 WSC victory at Ventura.
The Vaqueros (5-1, 2-0) posted their fourth straight win. Bunderson, Kassandra Ortiz and Gabrielle Goss got singles points and the teams were tied 3-3 heading into doubles.
Mariko Sagara/Jessica Powell won the No. 1 doubles for VC and Goss/Madison Ortiz took the No. 3 doubles set 8-1, creating a 4-4 tie.
Bunderson and Zapata De Lira knocked off Jia Wiebe/Megan Fleming 8-5 for the victory. Bunderson is a freshman from Santa Ynez HIgh and Zapata De Lira is a freshman from Carpinteria High.
"Tyler and Lesly were playing together for the first time and pulled off a great win to decided the match," said first-year coach Randy Moharram. "This was really a team effort and a team victory."
The Vaqueros have two road matches next week – Tuesday at Antelope Valley and Thursday at Bakersfield.
