LANCASTER - Melissa Lee led the Marauder women's volleyball team with eight kills, however, it was not enough as Rio Hondo College entered Marauder Gymnasium and left with a convincing 25-18, 25-12, 25-18 over AVC, Wednesday evening.
"Our mentality wasn't there today. Physically were there, but mentally we were not. This loss was on us," AVC libero Elizabeth Perez said. "We didn't communicate and we had a lot of mental errors. I know we can get over this loss, but we have to get over the little mistakes. I think when we start out on a bad note, it takes us a while to get going. We got into our own heads."
The Marauders fell to 1-1 while the Roadrunners improved their record to 3-5.
The first set was tight midway through before Rio Hondo began to separate itself from the Marauders. The Roadrunners held a slight 12-10 lead before extending the lead to 22-14. AVC tried to chip away by trimming the lead to 22-17, but it was too late.
With the score tied 10-10 in the second half, the Roadrunners flexed thier muscles by winning 15 of the final 17 points and easily taking the set.
Taylor Williams finished with 20 assists, four aces and one block for the Marauders. Teammate Brittnee Wright added five kills and Kaeley Avendano led AVC with 10 digs.
AVC plays Friday as it travels to Palm Desert to face College of the Desert.
