Glendale College Men’s Tennis Wins ’19 Team and Singles Title; Ventura Wins Doubles

The Glendale College Men's Tennis team wrapped up their 1st Western State Conference team Championship since 2014 recently. It's the 5th overall conference title for the Vaqueros. Glendale was led by Glendale College's freshman Mark Peneff who claimed the 2019 WSC Singles Championship. Ventura College meanwhile was home to the 2019 WSC Men's Doubles Championship team in freshmen Antonio Rosales and Kyle Spiegelman.

Glendale would put themselves in the drivers seat early on for the team championship, defeating second place finisher Ventura College twice early in the season. Both of those meetings were taut affairs with the Vaqueros edging the Pirates 5-4 each time. Glendale would finish the team season strong, defeating LA Piece 8-1, Santa Barbara 7-2, and Bakersfield 9-0. In the end, Glendale would be seeded #5 in the 2019 CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships. Ventura would go on to be seeded #7. The Vaqueros would go down swinging falling to #4 San Diego City College 4-5, while Ventura fell 5-0 to #2 Irvine Valley College.

In the 2019 WSC Singles Championships, Peneff came in as the top seed. Peneff lived up to the hype as he didn't drop a game through the first three rounds. In the semi-finals, Peneff got his first push of the tournament, but ended up winning 6-4, 6-2. In the championship match, Peneff faced Rosales of Ventura, winning 6-4 and 6-3. For Rosales and Spiegelman, their road to the 2019 WSC Doubles Championships had to go through Peneff and his partner freshman Nicholas Pupiec. Rosales and Spiegelman would win the first set 6-3 and jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Peneff and Pupiec retired.
