Citrus’ Wong is Player of the Year; Valley’s McMillan Coach of the Year

Citrus College sophomore Johnathan Wong was named the Western State Conference Most Valuable Player, while Los Angeles Valley College's head man Jim McMillan was tabbed as the WSC Coach of the Year. Wong is the first Owl to be named Player of the Year since his current Head Coach Kenny Clements was named the Player of the Year in the Foothill Conference back in 1996. McMillan meanwhile was named the Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season and seventh in his LA Valley career.

McMillan won the award after leading LA Valley to the Western State Conference title for the fourth consecutive season. The Monarchs finished the season 22-8 overall and a perfect 6-0 in WSC play. The Monarchs would go on to be seeded #3 in the 2017 CCCAA Southern California Regionals. Valley upended #6 Cerritos 11-8 in the quarterfinals before falling to #2 Long Beach City College 8-7 in the semi-finals.

Wong, who was a 1st team All-WSC selection as a freshman, wrapped up an impressive two-year career by leading the entire State in goals (138) and exclusions drawn (81). He added 53 assists and 48 steals, and helped lead the Owls to a third place finish in the 2017 CCCAA Southern California Regionals, scoring the game winning goal in sudden-death overtime.
