Moorpark’s Historic Season Paves Way for Post-Season Awards

After breaking one of the longest conference championship streaks in the State of California, the Moorpark College Women's Basketball historic 2018-2019 campaign continued into the award seasons as they swept the top honors in the WSC North. Freshman guard Breanna Calhoun and sophomore center Barbara Rangel were named co-MPV's, while head coach Kenny Plummer was named the Coach of the Year.

Calhoun and Rangel formed a fearsome duo for the Raiders this past season. Rangel was named the co-MVP of the WSC North as a freshman in 2017-2018 and followed up that terrific season with another this past year. Rangel averaged 17.8 points on 59.5% shooting from the floor this past year. Rangel was a monster on the glass grabbing 14.5 rebounds per game (1st in the WSC and 4th in the State), and stopped many runs into the lane by averaging 3.4 blocks per game (1st in the WSC and 3rd in the State).

Calhoun meanwhile led the way for the Raiders by averaging 19 points a game. She did so on 55.7% shooting from the floor, 38.5% shooting from the downtown, and 70.5% from the charity stripe. In addition to her scoring prowess, Calhoun averaged 6.6 assists and 4.1 steals a game.

For Plummer, it's the second straight Coach of the Year honor for the third-year Head Coach. Plummer guided the Raiders to their first conference title since 1991, snapping a 28-year conference winning streak by Ventura College. It's the fifth conference title in the program's history.
