Santa Barbara Wins ’19 Team Title, While Bakersfield Is Home to Singles & Doubles Champs

The Santa Barbara City College Women's Tennis team claimed the 2019 Western State Conference Championship, their first since 2001 and their 16th overall. While the Vaqueros took home the team crown, it was Bakersfield College who won the singles and doubles titles with Gades sophomore Kayleen Sanchez helping spearhead both efforts.

The Vaqueros wrapped up the conference team title with a regular season match to go. Santa Barbara made it official when they defeated second place Bakersfield College 6-3, winning the last four singles matches and winning their first two doubles matches. Santa Barbara would go on to garner the #5 overall seed in the 2019 CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Vaqueros would knock off # Fullerton College 5-4 in the opening round, before falling to eventual State Champion Orange Coast College in the Southern California semi-finals.

For Sanchez, she had to face her Bakersfield teammate and doubles partner in sophomore Paige Darstein to claim the 2019 WSC Singles title. The duo battled it out with Darstein taking the first set 6-3. Sanchez rallied in the final two frames though, defeating Darstein 6-2 and 6-1. After the tough three-setter the pair came together for a 6-3, 6-2 win over the #3 seeded pair from Glendale College in the conference semi-finals. They followed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the 2019 WSC Doubles Championship match over the #4 seed pair from College of the Canyons.
