Cuesta Women's Volleyball picked up its first Western State Conference win with a sweep of visiting Pierce (26-24, 25-22, 25-12). The WSC is loaded with four teams ranked in the State's Top 20, including a pair of teams in the Top 10. Cuesta's Spikers opened conference play against #16 Santa Barbara and #20 Ventura, but tonight they hosted a fellow unranked member of the circuit, Los Angeles Pierce. The Cougars and Brahmas both sought their first WSC victory and battled throughout the night. The opener was neck and neck, tied at 15-15, and later at 22-22, then, after the Brahmas fended off two game points, knotted at 24-24. Luckily the Cougars were able to scratch out the next two points and take control of the match, 26-24. However, the second set was a repeat of the first, as the foes split the first 42 points of the set, yet, once again, the Cougars broke free to take four of the next five points and push Pierce to the edge of defeat, 25-22. The Cougars' confidence and the Brahmas' dismay was evident as the third set began. Cuesta jumped out 10-3 and rolled to a convincing victory, 25-12, to sweep the match. The victory moved the Cougars to 8-9 overall and 1-2 in WSC action.
Cuesta's Spikers shall take a break from conference this Saturday and host a non-conference tri-meet against Lemoore and Ohlone. The Cougars open with Lemoore (10 AM) and take a break as the Eagles play Ohlone (Noon). The visiting Renegades did not make last week's CCCAA State Poll but are ranked 11th in the NorCal Regional Poll. After their match with Lemoore, Ohlone shall be waiting on the court to play the Cougars in the tournament finale (2 PM).
