No. 1 Cypress Chargers Women’s Soccer Advances to Regional Final with Another Shutout
Chargers Dominate on Both Ends to Secure Spot in Regional Final
CYPRESS, CA - The No. 1 Cypress Chargers Women's Soccer team continues to dominate in the postseason, earning a 2-0 victory over the No. 9 Santa Monica Corsairs in the third round of the 3C2A SoCal Regionals. The win marks their second consecutive playoff shutout and propels them to the regional final, where they will host the winner of Santa Barbara versus Chaffey on Saturday, November 30.
The matchup against Santa Monica carried extra weight, as the two teams met in the final round of last year's regionals—a game Cypress won 3-2 to punch their ticket to the State Tournament.
Coming off a commanding 4-0 win against College of the Desert in the second round, the Chargers carried their momentum into this matchup. The game was highly physical from the start, but Cypress capitalized early when a foul inside the box awarded them a penalty. Megan Alcantara stepped up to the spot and buried the PK, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Cypress dominated the first half offensively, outshooting the Corsairs 9-2.
In the second half, Santa Monica increased their intensity, forcing Chargers goalkeeper Sofia Lopez to make two clutch saves to preserve the lead. Cypress maintained their composure and continued to press forward. Amber Mielke created a pivotal play, driving down the field and finding Itzel Ramirez on the right side. Ramirez angled her shot perfectly past the Corsairs' keeper to secure the Chargers' 2-0 victory.
UP NEXT: With their sights set on the regional championship, Cypress will look to keep their playoff momentum alive in the final round on home turf. The final round of regionals will be held at Cypress College on Saturday, November 30.
