
The Pirate baseball team gave up an eight-run second inning and could never recover Tuesday, falling to Allan Hancock 11-7 Tuesday at Pirate Park. Brandon Contreras had a pair of hits with two runs batted in and a run scored while Tommy Castaneda and Lucas Martinov also recorded a pair of hits each with an RBI and a run scored. Outside the second, VC pitching gave up three earned runs while scattering seven hits over eight innings with four strikeouts and five walks.
Ventura struck first with four runs in the bottom of the first. Henry Borjas was hit by a pitch before Castaneda and Matthew Ramirez each singled to load the bases before the seats were warm. Grant Rodriguez grounded out, scoring one run and Martinov made it on base on an error scoring another. With two outs, Ramirez stole third before Daniel Aguilera walked, setting up a two-RBI single from Contreras for the 4-0 margin.
The Bulldogs countered with the big inning in the second to take an 8-4 lead, and scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and ninth frames.
The Pirates tried to rally wit three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Contreras led off with a single and Ben Drumheller drew a pinch-hit walk. Borjas doubled home a run and Castaneda grounded out to plate another score. Ramirez then made it to first on an error, scoring Borjas for the final run, making the score 11-7.
Jacob Tostado took to the hill as the starter, and pitched three innings. Jathan Magana came on in relief to throw six innings, giving up two runs while striking out a pair.
The Pirates and Bulldogs will continue their series on Thursday April 10 in Santa Maria at 2:00 pm.
