Softball defeats Ventura in extra innings on Kylie Kolkowski's 2 run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 8th
The defending WSC North champion Softball is not ready to relinquish their title just yet.
Trailing 7-4 to visiting Ventura, the Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the sixth at 7-7. Niether team scored in the 7th, setting up a dramatic finish. The Pirtaes had two on with one out but Raider pitcher Amanda Smith enticed a grounder and a pop-fly to end Ventura's threat. With one out in the bottom of the 8th, Leah Cowans walked with Kylie Kolkowski on deck. With the count 1-1, Kolkowski skied a homerun over the field fence to end the game 9-7. With the win and having won 7 in a row, 6 on the field in conference action, the Raiders have climbed back into second place and trail first place Ventura by half a game with one conference game remaining. The Raiders will need a win at Santa Barbara and help from either Oxnard or Hancock to claim at least a share of the WSC title. Stay tuned.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the 1st on Kolkowski's RBI double to score Cowans. 1-0 after 1 inning. Mia Gregory opened the 3rd with a lead-off homerun to make it 2-0 after 3 innings. VC plated 3 runs in the top half of the 4th to take a 3-2 lead after 4. They would add two more runs in the top of the 5th to make it 5-2 but the Raiders responded in their half of the 5th. Gregory lead off with her second homerun of the day. After Kailey Greene flied out, Cowans walked again. Kolkowski reached base on a single. They advanced a base on a wild pitch and Ashlyn Olson RBI single scored Cowans. 5-4 Raiders trail after 5.
Ventura padded their lead with 2 runs in the top half of the 6th. In their half of the 6th, Danielle Bishop walked to open the inning. Camila Dalmau was hit by pitch. 2 on no outs. Gregory roped a RBI double to left center to score Bishop, Dalmau was out at 2nd. With two outs, Cowans' singled home Gregory and Kolkowski followed with a RBI triple to score Cowans and tie the game 7-7.
Kolkowski was 4 for 5 and hit for the cycle with 4 RBIs. Gregoey was 3 for 5 with 2 homeruns with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Cowans was 1 for 1 but scored 4 times. Smith got th w win in the circle.
Sidenote: With her 4 RBIs, Kolkowski sits with 56 RBIs on the season and needs 8 more to break the MC RBI season record which sits at 63.
