Hancock Explodes for 21 Runs in Shutout Win Over Santa Monica on Sophomore Day
SANTA MARIA, Calif. – Allan Hancock College softball team delivered an offensive onslaught and backed it with a shutout performance in the circle after overpowering Santa Monica College, 21-0, in a five-inning mercy-rule victory on Thursday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Bulldogs honored a group of six sophomores who are nearing the end of their careers in an AHC uniform. The group of honorees included Kaylee Dolores, Jonessa Marquez, Riley Vannasap, Katy Matthews, Juliza Evans, and Khaelii Robertson-Mack.
Hancock (9-18, 5-8) erupted for 15 runs in the first inning alone, sending 19 batters to the plate and collecting 13 hits in the frame. They added six more runs in the third to seal the lopsided win as the team closed out the day with 20 hits, two doubles, and 21 RBIs.
Vannasap led the charge with a 3-for-3 effort, including a double, three scored runs, and two RBIs. Tori Salazar matched the offensive firepower, going 4-for-5 and adding an RBI from the two-spot in the lineup. Freshman Isabel Sanchez drove in a game-high four runs, collecting two hits and a hit-by-pitch in her three plate appearances. Dezirae Rodriguez and Roberston-Mack added to the effort with three RBIs apiece.
In the circle, Havanah Michel was dominant, spinning a complete-game four-hit shutout. The freshman right-hander struck out six and walked only two over five innings, improving her season record to 5-15. Michel's efficiency (83 pitches, 47 strikes) and ability to induce ground balls (six) helped stifle the Corsairs' (2-15, 2-11) offense throughout the afternoon.
Defensively, the Bulldogs played error-free softball and turned a pair of double plays, including a highlight reel 6-4-3 twin killing turned by Dolores, Salazar, and Sanchez. The win marks Hancock's largest run output of the season and second conference shutout.
