
Pirate men's tennis standout Rafael Matias ended his Ventura College career Saturday in the Top-8 in the state at the 3C2A Championships at The Ojai Tournament. VC's top singles player fell in the quarterfinal round of the draw, 6-4, 6-0 against an opponent from Irvine Valley College.
Matias played No. 1 singles for the Pirates all season, finishing the year with an overall record of 17-5, including a 13-4 mark against community college competition and a runner-up finish in the Western State Conference Singles Tournament.
The sophomore from Sao Paula, Brazil ws the final Ventura player remaining in The Ojai. His setback ended the Pirates' season with a team mark of 14-4. They were 6-0 in the WSC, claiming the program's fourth straight conference title and its 19th in the past 22 seasons, stretching their conference winning streak to 31 dual matches.
