Comets upset Corsairs for first win

SAN MARCOS, CA (9/5/2024) — The Palomar College men's soccer team earned their first victory of the season in commanding fashion, defeating No. 9 Santa Monica College 3-0 on Friday. The Comets displayed skill and composure throughout the match, securing a clean sheet and a much-needed win.

Ben Schumann opened the scoring in the 14th minute, capitalizing on an assist from Matt Esposito. Schumann's well-placed shot gave the Comets an early lead and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Esposito continued his strong performance in the second half, converting a penalty kick in the 67th minute to double Palomar's advantage. His calm finish highlighted the team's confidence and control in the match.

Schumann added his second goal of the day in the 87th minute, finishing off a long pass from goalkeeper Amanueal Kidanemariam. Kidanemariam not only provided the assist but also played a crucial role throughout the game, making several key saves to preserve the shutout.

With momentum on their side, the Comets are eager to build on this victory as they prepare for their next match. They will travel to Santiago Canyon College for a 3 p.m. showdown on Tuesday, looking to continue their strong form.
