VISALIA - COS women's basketball defeated Cerritos 83-57 in the first round of the 40th annual Gilcrest Tournament.

The Giants (9-1) played lockdown defense, allowing Cerritos to score only 19 points in the first half.

Sequoias scored 48 points in the second half, the most they have scored in any half this season. Zharia McCollum had a team-high 19 points in the victory.

The COS bench scored 42 points and sophomore guard Myasia Gray was the main contributor with 11 points. Darci Finnigan and Idalis Rubalcava had 9.

"Winning the first game puts you in the winners bracket so definitely nice," COS head coach Ray Alvarado said. "Zharia kept it simple, and when she does that she is special."

The Giants will face undefeated Los Angeles Valley in the second round of the tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. tomorrow at Porter Field House.
