Men's Basketball: Pirates drop two at Compton College Tournament

Porterville College freshman Malik McCowan totaled 39 points over two games at the Compton College Tournament over the weekend. The Pirates suffered a pair of losses, falling 85-75 to West Los Angeles College on Saturday and lost 92-87 to Glendale Community College on Sunday.

The losses dropped Porterville to 3-10 overall as the Pirates closed out the 2016 portion of their winter schedule. The Pirates are back in action after the holidays on January 4 when they open Central Valley Conference play at West Hills College-Coalinga.

Porterville trailed by just one, 46-45, at halftime and would get no closer in the second. Porterville shot 40 percent from the field but made just 3 of 19 three-point attempts for the game.

McGowan and Da'Morea Green both scored 15 points to lead the Pirates in the loss. Darion Wilson came off the bench to score 13 points and grab a team-high eight rebounds while Miguel Mejia had 13 points and six rebounds.

Glendale 92, Porterville 87
Porterville closed out the first half with an 11-3 run to turn a 42-39 deficit into a 50-45 halftime advantage. But in the second, Glendale put together an 18-0 run to jump ahead for good at 65-54 with 12 minutes to play.

The Pirates launched 31 three-pointers in the contest, connecting on 11. McCowan cooled off a bit, but still led PC with 13 points. Tevin Howell scored 11 points while Steven Ulloa added 10 points. Green had a good all-around game, contributing nine points, four rebounds, three steals, and three assists.
