IMPERIAL - It didn't take long for the Marauder men's soccer team to make history.
AVC won its first-ever men's soccer match in school history in its inaugural season with an easy 4-1 victory over Imperial Valley College.
"Today we made history, and to do so with a victory is even sweeter. I'm proud of the team, both the defensive squad as well as the attacking team," first-year head coach Jerry Stupar said. "Our focus now is to teach a 30-man freshman roster to play like sophomores by instilling our program philosophy and discipline."
Stupar spend eight seasons as AVC's women's head coach before taking over the men's program.
Jose Mojica led the Marauders (1-0) with two goals and one assist. Teammate Carlos Cruz added a goal and an assist of his own. The first goal for the Marauders came from Mojica which was assisted by Cruz. Mojica returned the favor as he assisted Cruz for AVC's second goal.
"It was a good first game, but it's only the beginning. We still have a full season ahead of us to look forward to," goal keeper Trevor Allen said. We can't let up. We just have to keep pushing harder in order to achieve our goal."
Allen allowed only one goal and had a couple of saves.
Still the Marauders have much to accomplish and things don't get any easier as they face defending state champion Oxnard College, as well as Chaffey College which was ranked as high a No. 3 in the state last season.
