The College of the Canyons Men's Golf team wrapped up the 2017 Western State Conference Championships on Monday at the 2017 Western State Conference Finals. The Cougars capped off a 73-4 campaign on the links by winning both rounds, for their 8th straight WSC title and their 23rd overall.
In the WSC Finals, the Cougars held off a hard charging Ventura College squad. Canyons beat the Pirates by a single stroke in each round, 376-377 in the first and 377-378 in the second. Daniel Taplin led the Canyons charge with a rounds of 73 and 74, good enough for the third best individual finish on the afternoon when you combined the two rounds. Ventura's Brandon Resnick would edge Taplin with a 74 and one-under par 71 in the second round, while Santa Barbara City College's Niels Andersen went for a day low of 74 and 68.
On the season, Canyons' Ben Campbell and Ventura's Joey Herrera would share the Individual Title, with each posting season averages of 73.33. The two players were named the Co-MVP's of the Western State Conference, while College of the Canyons' Gary Peterson was named the Coach of the Year.
All in told, four teams from the Western State Conference will represent the conference at next week's CCCAA Southern California Championships. College of the Canyons, Ventura College, Santa Barbara City College, and Citrus College will move on as teams. Individually, John Schultz, John Lentz, and Zack Silverman from Glendale College will advance. Antelope Valley College's, Aaron Volenant will also advance as an individual.
