Citrus, Ventura, and West LA Claim WSC Men’s Titles; Seven WSC Schools Make Playoffs

The Citrus College, Ventura College, and West Los Angeles College Men's Basketball teams all claimed 2018 Western State Conference Championships this past week. Citrus took home the East Division crown, while Ventura College won the North title, and West Los Angeles College was the South Division champion.

For Citrus it's their sixth title as a member of the WSC and their second straight, after sharing the 2017 East championship with Barstow College. The Owls were the first of the three schools to clinch the outright title, defeating Antelope Valley College 90-73 in Lancaster on Wednesday.

Ventura meanwhile won it's 15th title in program history, and third straight. The Pirates wrapped up the outright championship on Saturday night when they downed visiting Santa Barbara City College 79-62.

For West Los Angeles College, it's just the second ever WSC title, and first since 2006. The Wildcats title hopes went down to the wire as they held off second place College of the Canyons at home on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 93-79 victory.

All three schools will represent the WSC in the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs this coming week along with the three runner-ups in each division and a fourth team in Cuesta College.

Citrus is the highest seeded team in the WSC, nabbing the #3 overall seed. Ventura checked in at #9, and will travel to Copper Mountain College on Friday evening to take on the Fighting Cacti. #10 Allan Hancock College (2nd place in WSC North) will head to #7 Fullerton College on Friday, while the remaining three teams will all play on Wednesday.

18 Antelope Valley College (2nd place in WSC East) will travel to #15 Cuesta College (3rd Place in WSC North) for a 7PM showdown in San Luis Obispo. #19 West Los Angeles College will travel to #14 San Diego Miramar College, with the winner of that match-up headed to Citrus College on Saturday night. #20 College of the Canyons rounds out the seven WSC schools as they travel to #13 Santiago Canyon College also on Wednesday.
