History Making Season Ends in Awards for Bakersfield Men’s Soccer

The 2019 Bakersfield College Men's Soccer program had a historic season in just it's fourth year of existence. The program, which launched in 2016, won it's first ever Western State Conference South Division title this past season, and was rewarded by having four individuals earn post-season conference honors. Sophomore Edgar Gonzalez was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while sophomore Christian Gonzalez was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Sophomore keeper Armando Alvares was named the Goalkeeper of the Year, with manager Vayron Martinez being named the Coach of the Year. Antelope Valley College's sophomore Dylan Gonzalez shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Christian.

Edgar Gonzalez led the Renegades with six goals and seven assists this past year. Gonzalez also added seven assists for a team best 19 points. Christian Gonzalez and Armando Alvares combined to lead a defense that gave up just 29 goals in 2019 and posted a 1.36 GAA. Alvares also had 83 saves, a .761 save percentage, and four shutouts. For Dylan Gonzalez his AVC squad allowed just 35 goals and posted a 2.00 GAA.

Martinez guided the Renegades to the first conference title after they went 10-8-3 overall and 4-2-2 in WSC South play. Bakersfield earned 14 points, and clinched the outright title on the last day of the season with their 2-1 win on the road at College of the Canyons.
