Ventura and Bakersfield Go Wire to Wire; Win Swim Championships

Valley Glen, CA -- The Ventura College Men's Swim program and the Bakersfield College Women's Swim program went wire to wire, leading all three days of the 2014 Western State Conference Swimming and Diving Championships to claim their respective team titles. The Pirates won with a  total of 615 points, while the Renegades won with 607 points.

Bakersfield closed out the weekend with continued consistency and a pair of wins in two events. The Renegades finished 1st in the 400 Free Relay, that closed out the weekend, with a time of 3:38.99. Bakersfield also benefitted by claiming the top two spots in the 100 Free, as Shelby Bayne and Clarissa Gardella finished in 1st and 2nd place respectively.

In the men's events, Ventura pulled away from Cuesta, despite only one first place finish in the final day of competition as the Pirates proved what a well-rounded team they had. Ventura's lone first place win was in the 200 Fly, where Christopher Sands posted a time of 1:52.51.

Two more records also fell on the final day of the competition. Santa Monica's Jia Ng broke a record for the second straight day, besting the previous record set in 2012 in the 100 Breast by 1/10th of a second. Ng posted a time of 1:59.22. Allan Hancock College's Leanna Bramble also broke a record on the day. Bramble set the new mark in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.41 a full second faster than the previous mark which was set in 2010.
