LA Valley, Ventura, Canyons & West LA Take Home Titles; Five Teams are in Post-Season

Los Angeles Valley College and Ventura College Women's Basketball won outright Western State Conference Championships this past week, while College of the Canyons and West Los Angeles College share a title in the WSC South. For LA Valley, the Monarchs took home the WSC East title, while Ventura once again laid claim to the WSC North title.

Los Angeles Valley was the first team, either men or women to clinch a title in the WSC in 2018. The Monarchs sealed up the WSC East title way back on February 10th when they beat Barstow College. That wasn't enough for LA Valley though as they wrapped up a perfect 10-0 WSC East campaign on Saturday with a 79-43 win at Victor Valley College. It's the second straight title for the Monarchs, after splitting the title last year with Antelope Valley College, and the 12th overall for the program.

Ventura College meanwhile wrapped up their 28th straight WSC title. The Pirates rallied from a loss at home to Moorpark College on the 10th of February to win their final two WSC North games by a combined 59 points to seal the championship.

For the West Los Angeles College women it's just the second ever conference championship for the Wildcats, and their first since 1999. To make matters more interesting, the Wildcats won in dramatic fashion getting a lay-up by Daija Black with one second left to defeat visiting College of the Canyons on Saturday afternoon. The lay-up made it 71-70 in favor of West LA, forcing the Cougars of Canyons to share the title for just the second time in their storied history. For Canyons, it's the 16th overall title.

LA Valley, Ventura, and West LA are three of the five teams that will represent the Western State Conference in the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional Playoffs this coming week. Two other schools in Antelope Valley College and Moorpark College will join them, while Canyons was inexplicably left out.

Ventura is the highest seeded team of the group, checking in at #5 and hosting #12 Cypress College on Friday night. LA Valley meanwhile was the #8 overall seed and will host cross-division mate Moorpark College (2nd Place in WSC North) who checks in at #9 on Friday.

West Los Angeles College was seeded 11th by the seeding committee and will be off to #6 El Camino College on Friday evening. Antelope Valley College was the fifth and final WSC team to earn a post-season bid, and are seeded 16th where they'll host #17 Cerritos College on Wednesday, for the right to travel to #1 Palomar College on Saturday evening.
