
Moorpark's McCarthy inducted into the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame
In a ceremony held on March 12th, assistant women's basketball coach Remy McCarthy was inducted into the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
McCarthy started his career as an assistant men's basketball coach at Moorpark in 1979. In 1983, he became an assistant at the University of Utah. After Utah, he was head coach at Wenachee Valley College before returning to become the head men's basketball coach at Oxnard in 1988.
In 1994, he became the women's head coach at Moorpark and a year later an assistant on the men's program. In 1997, he took over at the helm of the program where he resided for 17 years before stepping away in 2014. His record as a head coach at the two California community colleges was 358-277. He was 272-209 with the Raiders and 86-68 at Oxnard. McCarthy won five conference championships, made 12 postseason appearances, and finished with a 13-7 record in the postseason.
During his acceptance speech, McCarthy thanked his wife Beverly and daughter Samantha for being with throughout his coaching career. He also thanked his father for instilling in him to defend in what you believe in. He also thanked all of his players from all of his teams "beleive it or not, I needed you more than you needed me". Some of his former players from Oxnard and Moorpark were in also in attendance.
