SMC's Maya Stokes reaches 1000 points
Santa Monica College women's basketball standout, Maya Stokes, reached the coveted 1,000+ points club for the Corsairs with time to spare in her sophomore season.
The Winward High School graduate hit the milestone after chipping in 22 points as SMC topped College of the Canyons in a 52-51 thriller. She is currently 6th in state in scoring (21.3 ppg) and was voted to the Western State All Conference First team last season.
Head Coach Lydia Strong reacted to the accomplishment by sharing, "I am really proud of Maya. She has been a mainstay in our program and is an amazing student athlete who leads our team. I thought last season when she scored 52 points in a game in the Pasadena City College tournament, that she had a chance to reach this amazing milestone, but watching her pass 1,000 points last night was really great to see."
"For the past two years, she has been our team captain. Maya has led us in scoring and assists while also excelling in the classroom. She has been on the Academic Dean's list three times here at SMC and has worked hard both on and off the court. She has obviously accomplished a lot at Santa Monica, and I can't wait to see what she does in the future," Coach Strong added.
